FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions:
Where does this therapy happen?
I work in a few locations in Dublin. Usually in the city centre but other venues are available as needed. Various time-slots are available and can be arranged to suit you.
How soon can you see me?
Usually appointments can be arranged within a week or two. If your need is more urgent please contact me by phone. If you get voicemail please leave me a number and the best time to call you. I can probably find a time slot to suit you.
Are Evening Appointments Available?
Yes, Evening therapy sessions can usually be arranged to suit your schedule.
How long does it take?
Well, each session lasts 50 minutes and initially we generally meet for 6 sessions and then review to decide to continue to do more work or not. Some clients prefer to do short term work others longer. The duration is really up to each individual client.
Isn't this therapy stuff just self indulgent?
Yes, I really hope so :) Investing in yourself to feel better is probably a good thing. so maybe 'self'-ishness can be part of a therapy process.
My friend went to therapy and now speaks in "Therapy Speak" - is this going to happen to me?
My own view is that therapy jargon tends not to be terribly useful outside the therapy room. We might try to keep 'jargon' in the room and encourage you to have a life outside of therapy too. Therapy is supposed to help you in your life not replace it - ask me more on this one when we meet for a therapy session. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Is it all about the past?
Now that's a great question - it's probably about the present. Whatever is happening in your life now is what is likely to cause you to want to come to therapy. Some of that is based on past experience. Some is in the present and more (usually) will be about moving into the future.
How much does this therapy cost?
I operate a sliding scale of fees based on your ability to pay. I have never refused a client for financial reasons and am happy to negotiate a reasonable fee with you. It's just my view but I think the quality of therapy you get is more important than the fee. What is useful is what will help you - and that is my job. While most clients can afford to pay something I am lucky enough to be able to offer some 'Reduced Cost' and (a limited number) of Free sessions for people who genuinely cannot afford to pay a full fee. Give me a call and we can discuss this if you like. Either way, don't let financial problems stop you from getting the help you need. If you need help CALL 086 608 42 92.
Is therapy not just for weak and vulnerable people?
I love when people ask this - Isn't it a good thing to look for help when you need it? Wouldn't it be useful to notice the strengthening things that happen in your life? Doesn't being able to seek the right kind of help make you stronger than you might think? So you might find that you are stronger than you think or you may even be ok feeling vulnerable - I call it 'Human' and that's why I do this work. It might sound nuts (is tht a bad word for a therapist to use?) but maybe people who are prepared to explore who they are just might be strong and brave.
What does Accredited member of IACP mean for me and other clients?
The IACP is the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The IACP is an organisation established in response to the perceived need by practitioners to have a National Association to set standards and criteria for the practice of Counselling and Psychotherapy. This ensures that members have achieved a professional standard of training, qualification, ongoing supervision and practice throughout their therapy work. This means that IACP accredited therapists work within a code of ethics, have supervision for client work and maintain a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development. If you do see a therapist please make sure they have accreditation. Simply stated, the idea of accreditation is to provide a better and more professional service for you. Please feel free to ask me any further questions about the IACP.
